What to do with kids in Oaxaca City - Ruta 66

10 Fun Things to Do With Kids in Oaxaca City (From a Dad Who Lives Here)

Oaxaca is a genuinely excellent destination for families — and I’m not just saying that as someone who loves the city. I’m saying it as someone who has been raising a kid here for years and navigating the balance between keeping an eight-year-old entertained and actually experiencing one of Mexico’s most culturally rich cities.

The tourist sites — Monte Albán, Hierve el Agua, El Tule — all work brilliantly with kids. But between day trips, you need places where children can run, play, and burn energy. And there’s also a whole category of cultural activities that kids genuinely love here, not just tolerate.

These are the ten I keep coming back to.

1. Poing Poing — Best Indoor Play Center in the City

The biggest and best play center in Oaxaca City, and the go-to for rainy afternoons or when you need somewhere to take the energy levels down a notch.

Poing Poing has laser tag, bumper cars, a rock climbing wall, trampolines, and the full range of indoor play equipment across multiple zones. It’s well-maintained, safe, and the staff are good with kids. Parents can sit and have a coffee while the children exhaust themselves — which is exactly what you need sometimes.

2. Ruta 66 — Water Slides, Go-Karts, and a Full Afternoon Out

My son’s current favourite, and I completely understand why.

Ruta 66 has a proper swimming pool with a water slide, a go-kart track, paintball, and various trampolines and jumping castles. Food trucks on site serving burgers, Oaxacan food, and drinks. It’s the kind of place you go for an afternoon and end up staying until closing.

The go-kart track alone makes this worth the trip for older kids — and the pool is excellent for hot days.

Location: Xoxocotlán, about 20 minutes from Centro Open: Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm–7pm Facebook: Ruta 66

3. Parque Ecoturístico Huayapam — Nature, Zip Lines, and Space to Roam

When you want something more outdoorsy and the city is starting to feel small, Huayapam is the answer.

This large eco-park about 20 minutes north of the city has zip-lines and aerial games, a big lake with ducks, horse rides, play equipment, and excellent Oaxacan food in the on-site restaurants. It’s expansive — the kind of place where kids can genuinely explore rather than just bounce around an enclosed space.

Families with children of different ages tend to love this one because there’s something for every level — the younger ones can do the lake and animals while older kids tackle the zip-lines.

Location: 20 minutes from Oaxaca City center Good for: All ages, half or full day Facebook: Parque Ecoturistico Huayapam

Alebrije Painting Workshop for kids — San Martín Tilcajete Oaxaca

4. Alebrije Painting Workshop — San Martín Tilcajete

This is the cultural activity that kids consistently love the most — and it’s one most families don’t think to look for.

San Martín Tilcajete, about 30 minutes from Oaxaca City, is the village famous for hand-carved and painted wooden alebrijes — the fantastical multi-animal creatures that are one of Oaxaca’s most recognizable crafts. Family workshops let kids paint their own small alebrije to take home, guided by the artisans who make them.

The combination of bright colors, strange creatures, and the hands-on process makes this genuinely engaging for kids from about age 5 upward. They leave with something they made themselves, which becomes one of the better souvenirs of the trip.

Location: San Martín Tilcajete, 30 minutes from Oaxaca City Good for: Ages 5 and up

5. Museo Infantil de Oaxaca — Kids Museum in a Train Station

This one is a genuine hidden gem that most visiting families don’t know about.

The Museo Infantil is built inside a beautifully converted old train station about 5 minutes from Centro — a fantastic building in itself, with a kids library, play areas, and regular workshops for children. The outdoor space is large and well-suited for running around.

What makes it particularly good is that it’s educational without feeling like school — the space is open and imaginative rather than a traditional museum format.

Check their Facebook page for current workshop schedules — these sell out and are worth booking ahead.

Location: 5 minutes from Centro Cost: Very affordable, some workshops free Facebook: Museo Infantil de Oaxaca

6. Skyline Trampoline Park — 40 Trampolines Under Fluorescent Lights

Around 40 different trampolines ranging from beginner to parkour-level advanced, in a dark venue with fluorescent lighting that makes the whole thing feel like a different world. Kids go slightly wild here, which is the point.

It’s well-run and the different sections suit different ages and confidence levels — the smaller kids aren’t bouncing into teenagers attempting flips.

Location: 10 minutes from Centro Cost: Around 300 pesos for 2 hours Facebook: Skyline Trampoline Park

7. Parque Llano — The Everyday Family Park

Parque Llano is one of the beating hearts of Oaxaca City, and one of the best places to observe local family life while your own children have a good time.

Play equipment across different zones, a jumping castle that goes up every afternoon, small electric cars to hire on weekends, and on weekend mornings — painting for kids set up in the park. The local children come here to skate, cycle, and rollerblade, which adds a social energy that’s genuinely fun for visiting kids who want to join in.

Parque Llano is the kind of place you can spend hours at, and if you’re hungry the park vendors and food stands around the edges have consistently good options.

Location: Northeast of Centro, 10-minute walk from the Zócalo Cost: Free (apart from the electric cars and jumping castle — around 50 pesos)

8. The Zócalo — Where Kids and Oaxacan Life Happen Together

The main plaza at the heart of Oaxaca City is more family-friendly than most visitors expect — consistently full of Mexican families with children of all ages, especially in the evenings and on weekends.

Street performers, balloon artists, musicians, clowns, and the long light-up balloons that children wave around near the cathedral — the Zócalo has an energy that kids respond to without needing to be directed toward anything specific. When a calenda (wedding parade) comes through, with its giant puppet figures and brass band, children who’ve been walking all day suddenly find their second wind.

Good for an hour in the afternoon or a proper evening out.

Location: Heart of Oaxaca City Cost: Free

9. Chocolate Making — Food and Culture Combined

Oaxaca is one of the world’s great cacao regions, and chocolate making workshops for families exist across the city and nearby villages. Kids grind cacao on a traditional metate, shape it into bars, and make hot chocolate from scratch — and eat the results at the end.

It sounds like something parents want more than children, but in practice it’s consistently one of the highest-rated activities for kids of all ages. The hands-on process, the smells, and the eating-your-creation finish make it genuinely engaging.

Several operators run this — check tour operators in Centro and the Mezcouting family activity platform for current options.

Good for: Ages 6 and up, shorter versions for younger children

10. Lucha Libre — For the Older Kids

Mexican wrestling — masked fighters, theatrical drama, crowd participation, and the closest thing to a pantomime you’ll find in southern Mexico.

The atmosphere at Arena Oaxaca is family-friendly despite the spectacle. Arriving early ensures good seats and getting snacks in the venue is part of the experience. After each fight, the wrestlers come out for photos — which is genuinely exciting for kids who’ve just watched them perform.

Check their Facebook page for the event schedule — around every second Sunday evening.

Location: Central Oaxaca City Good for: Ages 8 and up Cost: Very affordable — typically around 150 pesos per person Facebook: Arena Oaxaca

Day Trips That Work Brilliantly With Kids

For completeness — beyond the city activities, these day trips are all excellent with children:

El Árbol del Tule — the widest tree in the world, 20 minutes from the city. Kids love the scale and the animal shapes in the bark. Local children are always on hand to point them out. Easy half-hour stop on the way to anywhere east.

Monte Albán — the wide open spaces work well for kids even if the archaeology is over their heads. Bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes. The views from the top of the pyramids are something children genuinely respond to.

Hierve el Agua — natural pools you can swim in above a cliff edge, with the petrified waterfall formations below. The 167 stairs are the main logistics issue for younger children — manageable but worth knowing about.

El Tule + Hierve el Agua in one day — the most efficient family day trip combination from Oaxaca City.

Practical Tips for Families in Oaxaca City

Is Oaxaca safe for families? Yes — genuinely. Oaxaca is known for being a safe destination for families and I move around the city daily with my son without concern. Tourist areas are well-policed and the general culture is warm toward children.

Getting around with kids Taxis are affordable and easy — 70–100 pesos around Centro. For shorter distances the Zócalo and surrounding areas are entirely walkable. BinniBus (8 pesos) works for budget travel across the city.

Best neighborhoods to stay with kids Centro for convenience, Jalatlaco for atmosphere and quieter streets in the evenings. Both work well for families.

Stroller vs carrier Cobblestones throughout Centro and Jalatlaco make strollers challenging — a baby carrier or front carrier works significantly better for smaller children. For walking toddlers, just accept the pace will be slow and let them explore.

Food for kids Oaxacan food works well for children — quesillo (mild, stretchy cheese) is universally popular, memelas and quesadillas are simple and filling, and most restaurants can accommodate straightforward requests. Fresh fruit juices and aguas frescas are everywhere and universally good.
