How to Get from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido (2026 Guide)
*Last updated: May 2026
The journey between Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido used to be one of those trips people dreaded. Seven to ten hours on winding mountain roads, motion sickness, cramped vans, and a genuine sense of achievement when you finally arrived.
The new highway changed all of that.
Since the Autopista Barranca Larga–Ventanilla opened in early 2024, the same journey takes around three hours on a smooth modern road. Weekend beach trips from the city are now genuinely easy, and the coast feels like a natural extension of an Oaxaca trip rather than a separate expedition.
Here’s every option, with current 2026 prices and everything you need to know to choose the right one.
Quick Comparison
| Option | Time | Cost (MXN) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| ADO Bus | 3 hours | 350–420 MXN | Most travellers — comfort + reliability |
| Ruta Coatlanes Van | 3–3.5 hours | 300–350 MXN | Budget, frequent departures |
| Rental Car | 3 hours | 468 MXN toll + fuel | Freedom and flexibility |
| Private Driver | 3 hours | 5,000–7,000 MXN | Families, groups, luggage |
| Aerotucán Flight | 45 minutes | 2,500–3,500 MXN | Those short on time |

Option 1 — ADO Bus (Best for Most Travellers)
For most people, ADO is the right choice. It uses the new highway, takes around three hours, and is more comfortable than any van option at a similar price.
What you get:
- Air conditioning
- Onboard toilet
- Assigned seating with decent legroom
- Luggage storage underneath
- Multiple daily departures
Departure times from Oaxaca City: Multiple services throughout the day — typically from early morning through early evening. Check current times and book at ado.com.mx. The Oaxaca City bus terminal is on Calzada Niños Héroes de Chapultepec — factor in time to get there from Centro (about 10–15 minutes by taxi).
Cost: 350–420 MXN depending on service (standard ADO vs ADO GL, which has wider seats and more legroom — worth the small premium for the extra comfort).
Book in advance: During Semana Santa, Guelaguetza, and Day of the Dead periods, popular departure times sell out. Book at least 24 hours ahead during high season.
Seat tip: Sit on the right-hand side for the best views as you descend toward the coast.
On arrival in Puerto Escondido: The ADO terminal is reasonably central, but if you’re staying in Zicatela, La Punta, or Rinconada you’ll need a taxi for the last stretch — they’re plentiful outside the terminal.

Option 2 — Ruta Coatlanes Van (Budget and Frequent)
The minivan option runs roughly every 40 minutes from early morning to late evening — more frequent than ADO and slightly cheaper, but a different experience.
What you get:
- Frequent departures — no need to plan tightly around a schedule
- Drops passengers at various points along the route
- Gets you to smaller coastal towns ADO doesn’t serve directly
What you don’t get:
- Onboard toilet (one comfort stop along the highway)
- Luggage space is limited — large bags can be an issue
- Slightly longer journey time due to stops
Cost: 300–350 MXN Time: 3–3.5 hours Departure point: Check their Facebook page for current terminal locations and times — these occasionally shift.
Good option for solo travellers travelling light who want flexibility over a fixed timetable.Time: Around 3.5 hours

Option 3 — Driving the New Highway
The Autopista Barranca Larga–Ventanilla is a genuinely impressive piece of infrastructure — 104km of modern highway through the Sierra Madre mountains, with 3 tunnels, 10 bridges, and spectacular views of the forested valleys below.
If you have a rental car, this is a very easy and enjoyable drive.
Highway specifics:
- 104km long with two toll booths (one entering, one exiting)
- Well-signposted and fully mapped on Google Maps
- No petrol stations or services on the highway itself — fill up in Oaxaca City before you enter
- Total journey Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido: approximately 190km, around 3 hours
Toll costs 2026:
- Car: 468 MXN total (two booths)
- Motorbike: 234 MXN total
- Bring cash in small bills — card payment is not always available
Drive in daylight only. The highway itself is fine at night, but the approach roads and urban sections around Puerto Escondido are poorly lit. Don’t arrive after dark if you can avoid it.
Parking in Puerto Escondido: Most accommodation has street parking or a small lot. Ask your host when you book.

Option 4 — Private Driver (Best for Groups and Families)
Door-to-door, no terminals, no waiting, direct to your accommodation. For families with children, groups with surfboards, or anyone who just doesn’t want to deal with the logistics, a private driver is worth the premium.
Cost: 5,000–7,000 MXN one way depending on group size and vehicle Time: 3 hours What’s included: Pickup from your accommodation in Oaxaca City, drop-off at your accommodation in Puerto Escondido, toll fees included
Book through your hotel or a reputable operator rather than picking someone up informally. Several Viator operators run this route with good reviews.
⭐️ Private Transfer Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido — New Highway
Best for: Families with young children, groups of 3+, people with lots of luggage or surfboards, early morning arrivals when public transport doesn’t suit.
Daytime driving is always recommended.

👉 🌮 Unlock Oaxaca’s Best Street EatsOption 5 — Flying with Aerotucán
This is the option most travel sites don’t mention clearly — and it’s worth knowing about even if you probably won’t use it.
Aerotucán operates a direct daily flight between Oaxaca City airport and Puerto Escondido airport. It doesn’t appear on standard flight search engines like Kayak or Google Flights — you need to book directly through aerotucán.com.mx or call the airline.
The details:
- Flight time: 40–45 minutes
- Departures: Once daily (morning departure) — times vary slightly by season
- Aircraft: Small propeller plane, approximately 15 passengers
- Luggage allowance: 15kg included, excess charged additionally
- Cost: 2,500–3,500 MXN one way depending on season
Is it worth it? With the new highway making the bus a 3-hour journey, flying has lost most of its time advantage once you factor in airport check-in, security, and getting to/from both airports. At 5–10x the bus price, it’s hard to justify for most travellers.
The exception: if you’re extremely short on time, have a flexible budget, or the idea of a low-level flight over the Sierra Madre mountains appeals to you. The views on the approach to Puerto Escondido are genuinely beautiful.

Getting from Puerto Escondido Back to Oaxaca City
Everything above works in reverse. A few additional notes for the return journey:
ADO from Puerto Escondido: The terminal is centrally located in Puerto Escondido town. Buy tickets at the terminal or online — same pricing applies.
Timing: Morning departures are most popular. If you’re coming back for a flight from Oaxaca City, take the earliest bus available and build in buffer time. A 3-hour journey can stretch to 3.5 hours with traffic around Puerto Escondido.
Getting to the terminal from Zicatela or La Punta: Taxi from most accommodation — 5–15 minutes and 50–100 MXN depending on distance.
Bonus: The Coast Beyond Puerto Escondido
If your destination isn’t Puerto Escondido itself but one of the smaller coastal towns — Mazunte, Zipolite, Puerto Ángel, or Huatulco — the routing is slightly different.
Mazunte, Zipolite, and Puerto Ángel: There are no direct buses from Oaxaca City to these towns. The best route is ADO or Líneas Unidas to Pochutla (the regional transport hub), then a local colectivo from Pochutla to your destination. Journey time: around 3.5 hours total. Cost: 350 MXN for the Oaxaca–Pochutla leg, then 30-40 MXN for the colectivo.
ADO runs direct to Pochutla twice daily (check current times on ado.com.mx).
Huatulco: ADO runs direct from Oaxaca City approximately twice daily. Journey time around 5 hours via the new highway and connecting roads. Cost: around 450–500 MXN.

The Stopover Option — San José del Pacifico
This one is worth knowing about if you have flexibility and want to break the journey.
San José del Pacifico is a small mountain village on the old Highway 175 — the pre-highway route through the Sierra Madre. At 2,500 meters elevation, it’s cool, cloud-forested, and known for spectacular mountain views and an unusually relaxed atmosphere. Small guesthouses, good coffee, and a complete change of pace from both the city and the coast.
The new highway doesn’t pass through it — if San José is on your itinerary, you need to take the old mountain route (via colectivo or rental car on Highway 175) or make it a separate trip from Oaxaca City.
Journey time from Oaxaca City to San José on the old road: approximately 2–2.5 hours.
