When to Visit Oaxaca: Seasons, Festivals, and the Best Time to Go

|

Oaxaca shifts with the seasons—scorching heat, torrential rain, and those perfect months that make you want to stay forever. It’s not just about avoiding bad weather—it’s about syncing your trip with the city’s rhythm: street food sizzling in the sun, cultural highs like Guelaguetza and Day of the Dead, and quiet beach days in between.

50 Best things to See, Do and Eat in Oaxaca City: Your Ultimate Guide

The Heat: March to May

From March to May, Oaxaca heats up—think 32–35°C (90s°F), dry skies, and blazing sun. It’s hot, sure, but also golden and crowd-free. In Oaxaca City, you’ll find sunny plazas and quiet ruins. On the coast, the Pacific’s warm and laid-back.

If you love heat and space to roam, this is your window. Monte Albán is nearly empty, surf towns are quiet, and the food’s as good as ever. Just bring light clothes, sunscreen, and water—lots of it.

Not ideal for hiking or festivals, but if you’re chasing sun and solitude, this season’s for you.

Best time to visit Oaxaca - Rainy season

The Rain: June to September

By late June, the skies open up. Daily rains turn the hills green, the air thick, and the streets slick. Temps drop slightly (24–29°C / 75–85°F), but humidity rises.

Nature thrives now. Rain usually hits in the afternoons, so mornings are yours for markets or mezcal. The coast comes alive with surfers chasing big swells.

Yes, it’s wet. Roads flooded during a quick downpour. But the beauty? Unreal. And July brings Guelaguetza, Oaxaca’s biggest fiesta.

The Bliss: October to February

From October, Oaxaca finds its groove. The rain fades, the skies clear, and days hover around 21–27°C (70–80°F). Nights are cool, and everything feels crisp. This is my favourite time of year.

It’s high season for a reason—perfect for hiking, exploring ruins, or sipping hot chocolate in the plaza. Beaches are calm, mountains are dry.

Tourism spikes, so book early. But for weather, energy, and events, this is peak Oaxaca.

Guelaguetza: July’s Cultural Explosion

Held the last two Mondays in July (July 21 & 28 in 2025), Guelaguetza is Oaxaca’s beating heart—color, music, and Indigenous pride on full display. Expect swirling skirts, booming bands, and dancers tossing gifts into cheering crowds.

This is Oaxaca at its best and something you should definitely come to see.

Day of the Dead: October’s Haunting Magic

From October 31 to November 2, Oaxaca turns into a living altar. Streets glow with candles, faces painted like skulls, and the scent of copal in the air. Graves are covered in marigolds, and parades stretch into the night.

The weather’s perfect—cool, dry, and festive. But it’s crowded. If you’re coming for Day of the Dead in Oaxaca 2025, book as early as you can.

So, When Should You Go?

There’s no bad time. Want sun and space? March to May. Crave green hills and cultural fireworks? June to September. Dreaming of perfect weather all day long? October to February’s your moment.

Pick your season, follow your vibe—and let Oaxaca do the rest.
