How to pay your electricity bill in Oaxaca City. Step by step guide.
If you’ve just moved to Oaxaca (or anywhere in Mexico) or planning to, you might be wondering how to pay your electricity bill.
Unless you own the house, the bill won’t be in your name, even if you’re renting longterm. So if you are renting longterm (like I am), your landlord will most likely give you the bill and you’ll have to pay it on your own.
You can try the official CFE website here, create an account and go through there. It just seems more hassle than it’s worth. Maybe I’m just old school.
The easiest for me and the majority, is once you receive your bill, just go pay it at the CFE – Comisión Federal de Electricidad – Federal Commission of Electricity. Either with cash or card. It’s a painless, easy process.
If it’s more convenient, for an extra fee of around $10-12 pesos, you can also pay it at any Oxxo. Just take your bill in for them to scan.
Paying at the CFE branch or station, a quick guide on how it’s done.
- Type ‘CFE’ into Google Maps and find your nearest branch or kiosk. There’s varios located around Oaxaca City, and all over Mexico. You’ll never be too far away from one.
2. Once you get there, you’ll see the CFE machine that look like an ATM. Here is where you’ll pay.
3. Scan the barcode on the bottom of your bill. Then it will ask you to confirm the correct bill appears on the screen.
4. Click PAGAR. Then you can choose if to pay in Efectivo/Cash or Tarjeta/Card. If paying in cash (which I do), it’ll give you the option of receiving your change, or putting it towards your next bill.
And that’s pretty much it. Wait for your receipt and you’re done. Easy!!
And for those that have a car, they even have a drive though 👌
Also a note, the CFE machine is in only in Spanish, but there’s only a couple steps, so even with limited Spanish, you should be fine.
Hope this helps any new comers to Oaxaca trying to work out how to pay your electricity bill ✌️
